Origin of Bingo
Though the origin of bingo dates back to the 16 century, we'll discuss the history of bingo since 1929.
Edwin Lowe, a broke toy salesman, was watching people go crazy at a carnival booth in Atlanta, Georgia. People were dying to take their chance on a game called Beano. It made him curious and he decided to see what was going on.
He saw a horseshoe table covered with some numbered cards and beans! Every time the game host drew a wooden disk from a cigar box and called out loud the number on it, players marked the same number on their cards with a bean, if the number was there. The moment players finished crossing a line horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, they shouted “Beano!” and claimed the associated prize.
Lowe wanted to play but he couldn't as the wait time was very high. He stood there and gazed at the level of engagement. Lowe himself didn't realize that it was the break of dawn and the game host was stopping the game in order to take a break!
Lowe brought the idea back to his hometown in New York and shared it with his friends. He invited them to play Beano and the results were nonetheless same. Beano was an instant hit. He held a public Beano event. This was the day Bingo originated. One player was too excited about his win that he yelled “Bingo!” instead of “Beano!”
And bingo! Bingo was born.
